The Far-Eastern State Medical University was founded in 1930. The rector is DM, professor Vladimir Molochny.

Education is conducted according to the licence and State accreditation in the following specialities: general medicine, pediatrics, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing.

Theoretical studies are carried out in 3 educational buildings of the University.

Students from all regions of the Far East are taught by 427 tutors, among which 2 corresponding members of Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, 9 Honorary doctors, 64 Doctors of medicine, 259 tutors with academic degree are. The education is based on the educational programs of medical specialities according to the requires of State medical standard.

The Far-Eastern State Medical Library, which contains 610 744 copies, including 222 217 ones of scientific literature and 24 069 ones of foreign literature, is in the University.

61 departments of the University are equipped with personal computers. The single computer network, including more than 500 computers, is created. The students & tutors have an opportunity to receive necessary information from Internet and to work at the computers in one of the 9 equipped computer classrooms.

32 substructures of the University provide qualitative education, scientific work and everyday life of students & tutors. Students & doctors studying at the University live in 3 comfortable dormitories in the center of Khabarovsk.

After graduating from the University the education continues in one-year internship in 21 specialities and in two-years clinical residency in 64 specialities. Education in post-graduated courses is conducted in 24 specialities.

More than 3 000 specialists of healthcare annually raise their qualification on base of the University in the following basic specialities: general medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics & gynecology, 'physiotherapy, sport medicine, reflex therapy.

MEDICAL PROPHYLACTIC

The training of students in general medicine has been fulfilling from 1930. More than 30 000 students have graduated from the Medical-prophylactic faculty.

Today 254 tutors, including 48 Doctors of medicine & professors and 128 maters of medicine, instruct the students. 808 ones study general medicine at the faculty. Education is conducted in 3 university buildings and on the clinical bases in more than 10 regional & municipal medical institutions.

The qualification of the graduate from the speciality «General Medicine» is «Doctor». The period of studying is 6 years.

Studying includes theoretical course & practice, that's presented in 2 kinds: academic (25 % of curriculum time is spent for study in out-patient departments) and clinical practice after the 2nd, 3rd, 4th & 5th years. Clinical practice is passed in hospitals (as a nurse's assistant & a doctor's assistant) & ambulance stations (as a feldsher's assistant & a doctor's assistant). Classes last 6 hours a day, 6 days a week. The exams are held two times a year (in Winter & in Spring).

Training exists in the form of lectures, practical classes & seminars. Practical skills are acquired by training on phantoms (special dolls for training), being on duty in hospitals, managing patients, solving situational tasks. Special training & controlling computer programs, monographs, textbooks, practical recommendations & Internet are widely used for studying process. Individual educational plans are possible.

Graduate-doctors work under the control of certificated specialists. Graduates may work in sphere of theoretical & fundamental bases of medicine.

Graduate-doctor is going to continue the education in internship, residency & post­graduate courses (for theoretical departments only) according to the programs of post­graduate education. By this way graduates can acquire the most of medical specialities, such as: surgeon, physician, obstetrician-gynecologist, urologist, endocrinologist, traumatologist-orthopedist, psychiatrist, anesthesiologist, resuscitator, general practitioner and others.

PEDIATRIC

The pediatric faculty was organized in 1958. The training period is 6 years. Clinical primary post-graduate courses last 1 year. Specialist certificate: «Pediatrist» or « Pediatric surgeon». In 1963 first 122 graduates received their diplomas. By now over 40 graduations have taken place on the faculty, over 5500 pediatrists working not only on the Far East, but also in other regions of the Russian Federation, have been trained. At present there are over 700 students on the pediatric faculty. 247 tutors, including 105 masters of medicine, 37 doctors of medicine, one corresponding member of Russian Academy of Medical Science and one Honoured Scientist train students, obtaining pediatric speciality, on 41 departments.

The first, second and third students of the pediatric faculty at the beginning study theoretical branches of medical science: Normal Anatomy, Histology, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacology, etc.

After the third year students obtain knowledge of clinical branches of science: Pediatrics, Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Ophtalmology, Pediatric Surgery, Immunology, Clinical Pharmacology, etc.

Students' education is carried on in the condition, approached to practical medicine. The bases of practical education are the District Clinical Pediatric Hospital, the Professor Piotrovich Pediatric Infectious Hospital, the Scientific Research Institution of Maternity and Childhood Protection, the Municipal Pediatric Clinic.

There are special Methodical Committee and Methodical Council working on the faculty. The latter deal with the problems of organization and improvement of educational and methodical work, review of educational and methodical documents of departments in accordance with the demands of State Educational Standart.

The pediatric faculty nowadays is a fully developed, highly professional pedagogical body, that assists the growth of medical and scientific specialists in the field of pediatric as well as the increase of quality of medical aid to the children of the Khabarovsk District and the Far Eastern Region.

DENTISTRY

The Dental faculty was founded in 1979. Period of education is 5 years. Clinical internship 1 year. Speciality Dentist. Certificate of specialist «Dentistry». Clinical residency 2 years. Certificate of one of the following specialities: Dental therapy, Dental surgery, Dental orthopedics, Dental pediatrics.

At the Dental faculty 15 professors, 10 associate-professors, 15 masters of medicine and 60 assistants work. Now more than 350 students study at the Dental faculty.

The Dental faculty has its own out-patient department «Unistom» (37 working places) fitted out with modern dental equipment for diagnostics, treatment & prevention of dental diseases. 80% of curriculum in specialized subjects is realized there.

Professional practice of students, training of clinical interns & residents, retraining of dentists are carried out on the base of the out-patient department. From the days of foundation more than 5 000 dentists had been trained anew or raised their qualification.

From the day of foundation of the faculty its tutors had published more than 1 300 scientific articles, had got more than 120 certificates of rationalization, 3 certificate of copyright.

More than 1 670 dentists have been trained at the Dental faculty. Most of them work in Khabarovsk region, in the Far East of Russia, in the countries of foreign Asia.

PHARMACY

The education of specialists in pharmacy is being held at the pharmaceutical faculty. The faculty was organized in 1964. The period of training covers 5 years.

The training is being conducted in accordance with the educational standard in the field of pharmacy. Students study the humanities, the social-economics, the natural sciences, the mathematics, the medical-biological and various professional branches of science. Senior students put the main accent on studying special courses such as Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology, Biotechnology, Pharmacognosis, Pharmaceutical Management and Economics. The wide choice of eligible courses (over 30} allow the students to realize their educational requirements and gain deeper knowledge on the problems of their interest in pharmacy.

The quality of specialists' education highly depends on practical training. The total duration of practice is 31 week. Practical courses take place at the pharmaceutical works, at the chemist's and at the profile departments.

Final attestation complete the training, the students receive diplomas in the specialty of «Pharmacy» being qualified as «pharmaceutical chemists».

Having graduated, young specialists in pharmacy complete primary and secondary post-graduate courses, and then improve their qualification every 5 years so that it conforms the demanded level.

Through 40 years of its work the pharmaceutical faculty have trained over 4 thousand specialists. The main part of graduates work in the pharmaceutical business. All-round education of graduates allow them to work successfully in other fields of economics: industry, agriculture, trade, in toxicological, forensic-medical, analytical and research laboratories, in the field of drug quality inspection, etc.

21 departments participate in the students' training. 105 experienced tutors including 8 doctors of medicine and50 masters of medicine conduct the educational process.

In 1997 the Drug Quality Control Center (headed by professor T.A. Stepanova) was founded on the base of the department of Pharmacognosis and Botany.

The corresponding course for training pharmaceutical chemists was opened in 1997. The opportunity to obtain second higher education in the form of corresponding course was afforded in 1998.

NURSING

The faculty of master degree nursing was organized in 1998. The new created faculty is the first at the Far East.

Education is conducted under specialty 060109 «Nursing» (qualification — «Manager»).

The main task of the faculty is to prepare managers and pedagogical personnel in nursing, and also for nurses guidance in the hospitals.

The nurses (basic and advanced level) are training on such specialties: «Nursing» (qualification — «Nurse») «Internal medicine» (qualification — «Doctor's assistant'), obstetrics (qualification — „Obstetrician»). There are 2 forms of education: Without discontinuing work (4,5 years) and externally (5 years).

In 2003 the first masters degree nursing were graduated.

For masters degree nursing the positions of deputy of head doctor responsible for nursing, main obstetrician and main doctor's assistant are introduced. After graduating from this faculty, the masters can continue the education on post-graduating courses or doctor's fellowship.

During education students study a lot of subjects: the humanities, economics, mathematics, natural science, medicine, management, psychology (46 subjects), have psychological, pedagogical, manager, before diploma practices (5 practices). During education the students made course and diploma works.

Annually up to 300 students study at the faculty of master degree nursing. The studies are conducted on the 24 University departments. The main are: Nursing department, pedagogical and psychological courses, nursing organizing and administration. The studies 4 professors, 33 masters degree, 20 instructors carry out.

POST-EDUCATION

The faculty of qualification increase & professional retraining of specialists was founded in 1961. It includes eight departments, where the doctors are instructed in basic medical specialities: general medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics & gynecology, psychiatry, neurology, anesthesiology & resustitation, medical rehabilitation & physiotherapy, radiation diagnostics & therapy. Annually about 3 000 doctors & pharmaceutists increase their qualifications on the faculty.

Besides training of main therapeutical specialities, the department of general & preventive medicine prepares the doctors for work in schools of arterial hypertension & bronchial asthma, diagnostics & treatment of HIV-associated infections. The surgeons have an opportunity to master the unique methods of operative treatment of severe forms of alimentary obesity. The department has also a considerable experience of laparoscopic operative interventions using.

The department of radiation diagnostics & treatment pays much attention to mastering new roentgenological & radiation diagnostics! methods and the most contemporary technologies of ultrasound diagnostics.

The department of medical rehabilitation & physiotherapy was founded in 1986 for instructing the doctors:

• physiotherapeutists;
• reflexotherapeutists;
• of therapeutic physical culture;
• balneologists.

The department staff has a unique experience of work in the sphere of medical using of hot mineral waters, pelloids, apparatus physiotherapy including the methods of physical factors influence (magnet, laser, ultrasound) to the points of acupuncture.

One of the oldest is the department of pediatrics & neonatology. The department staff pays particular attention to the problems of nutrition of pregnant women, newborns & children of early age, neonatology instructing.

The family doctors training is conducted in the department of general medical practice & out-patient treatment.
